January 2011. Building Survey.
Level II historic building survey of barn at Grange Farm completed prior to the proposed conversion of this structure.
The building has a classic design of a threshing barn with two large central doors either side of the threshing floor. This type of building was present at most farms up until the later 19th century when mechanisation rendered them obsolete. The building may well originally date to '1850' as stated on the date stone and could have replaced an earlier L-shaped set of buildings but it appears that at first it was constructed as a building extending approximately 8m longer westwards. The demolition of the western end did not occur until the second half of the 20th century, long after the second date stone of ‘1885’. The most likely explanation is that the building constructed by F.S. Bevan in 1850 was extended westwards by William Baxter in 1885. After demolition of the west end the date stone was reset within the western gable of the building.
See report (S2) for further details.
