Summary

In February 1998 a rapid identification earthwork survey observed a bank and large pit of unknown date. The pit is also visible on visualised lidar data from a survey flown in 2015, and it is probable that the earthwork still survives. The pit is one of several identified in the area, and is probably a small extraction pit of relatively recent, probably post-medieval or 20th century, date.

Map

February 1998. Walkover Survey.
Rapid Earthwork Identification Survey (Compartment 1011).
The survey located a low wide bank 3m in width and 0.3m high which could represent a tree belt marked on the tithe map (1845). A large pit 25m in diameter and 3m deep could be marl pit but it is not marked as such on the 6 inch 1st edition ordnance survey map (1879-1886).
See report (S1) for further details.
S. Howard (HES), 16 August 2011. Amended by P. Watkins (HES), 18 August 2015.

January 2020. Breckland National Mapping Programme.
The undated pit described above is visible as an earthwork on visualised lidar data (S2), slightly further north than originally recorded by the Rapid Earthwork Identification survey (S1). The bank was not identified on the consulted sources. The pit is one of several identified in the area, and is probably a small extraction pit of relatively recent, probably post-medieval or 20th century, date. As the lidar survey was flown relatively recently (2015), it is probable that the earthwork still survives.
The mapped extent of this site has been expanded further north to accommodate the updated location of the pit [1].
