Barn at Hall Farm.

March 2011. Building Survey.
Examined by A. Yardy and S. Heywood (HES).
Small threshing barn dating from early 1700s. The barn is constructed of red brick with blackened headers, most notably to the north and western facades. There is a flint plinth of cobbles topped with 4 courses of brick. The northern façade has a pair of staged buttresses to eaves height which flank the cart entrance. There are a pair of inserted and then blocked doorways in both east and west gable ends. The eastern gable has a large blocked window and the upper gable has been entirely rebuilt in the 20th century. The western upper gable has been built of a different colour brick and without use of vitrified bricks but otherwise looks of the same construction phase as that below. There are 2 vertical scars on the north and south corners of the western gable end providing evidence of a former adjoining building. There is a later lean-to addition on the south side of the barn under a catslide roof and of poorer quality construction. The roof covering is of water reed thatch with fleeking on the underside although at present only covering the northern pitch. The barn is of 6 bays, the central pair are narrower than the others. The roof structure is of high quality with chamfered principal rafters, collars and ties.
See report (S1) for further details.
A. Yardy (HES), 28 September 2011.
