Map

Milestone marking Norwich 18 miles and Watton 3 miles and also incorporating an Ordnance Survey benchmark. One of 16 surviving milestones along the former Norwich-Watton turnpike. The turnpike was established in 1770 and ran along the city walls from St Stephen's Gate to St Giles' Gate in Norwich and then to the windmill in Watton. It lasted for 100 years.
In common with the others in this series between Scoulton and Watton, this milestone is a white painted stone with a semi-circular top and the town lettering arranged in an arc over the mile numbers.
(S1) includes details of this and other surviving milestones along this route.

2011. Repair work was carried out by the Milestone Society.
This milestone was found in two sections in a ditch. Initially Milestone Society members joined these two sections together with stainless road and fixed into place with resin. The marker was then pressure washed and painted. When installing this milestone the surface of the road was found to be 12 inches below the ground which resulted in the stone being split in two and was set into a concrete surround.
Information from survey form (S2) and photographs (S3).
