Summary

It is recorded that a hospital, dedicated to St Stephen, stood in this area outside St Stephen's Gates. Although the date of its foundation is uncertain, it is known that it was not suppressed in 16th century.

Joy Lodey notes that the diocesan archives contain a probate inveotry of 1601 for William Roberts, “guider of the poor house without St Stephen’s Gates” suggesting this had become a workhouse.
