Full Description
During the early 20th century a range of supposedly Palaeolithic "sub-crag" flints were recovered from the cliffs, beach and foreshore between Weybourne and Sheringham, the majority by J. Reid Moir. The discovery of such objects in the vicinty of Weybourne is noted in (S1), (S2), (S3). With a few exceptions the majority are now though to be naturally-fractured flints, rather than genuine artefacts.
FINDS IN THE NORFOLK CASTLE MUSEUM
The Norwich Castle Museum hold 2 "sub-crag" flints from Weybourne which were previously part of the A. Q. Watson collection (NWHCM : 1953.177.10).
Information from (S4).
The Norwich Castle museum holds a burnt flint that was apparently found in situ by J. B. Calkin and thought to be "of Cromer Forest Bed Age" (NWHCM : 1963.28). This was presumably found in one of the Cromer Forest Bed deposits exposed in the cliffs or on the foreshore. It was amongst material transferred from the Ipswich Museum in 1963.
Previously recorded as NHER 6253.
Information from (S4).
The NCM also holds an object described as a Palaeolithic rostro-carinate flint implement that was donated by J. E. Sainty in 1927 (NWHCM : 1927.77). As with the majority of the "rostro-carinate" objects identified around this time this is almost certainly a natural, unworked 'eolith'.
FINDS IN OTHER MUSEUM COLLECTIONS
A note added to (S4) by E. Rose (NAU) suggests that the British Museum also holds "sub-crag" flint from Weybourne. This material could not be identified in the museum's current records.
Amended by P. Watkins (HES), 30 July 2014.
