Full Description
Milestone marking Norwich 3 miles and Watton 18 miles and also incorporating an Ordnance Survey benchmark. One of 16 surviving milestones along the former Norwich-Watton turnpike. The turnpike was established in 1770 and ran along the city walls from St Stephen's Gate to St Giles' Gate in Norwich and then to the windmill in Watton. It lasted for 100 years.
In common with most of the others in this series between Norwich and Scoulton, this milestone is a white painted stone with a semi-circular top and the town lettering arranged horizontally over the mile numbers.
(S1) includes details of this and other surviving milestones along this route.
