NHER 56309 (Structure) - 19th-century milestone marking Norwich 13 miles and Watton 8 miles

Milestone marking Norwich 13 miles and Watton 8 miles and also incorporating an Ordnance Survey benchmark. One of 16 surviving milestones along the former Norwich-Watton turnpike. The turnpike was established in 1770 and ran along the city walls from St Stephen's Gate to St Giles' Gate in Norwich and then to the windmill in Watton. It lasted for 100 years.
In common with most of the others in this series between Norwich and Scoulton, this milestone is a white painted stone with a semi-circular top and the town lettering arranged horizontally over the mile numbers.

2012.
During restoration the deep-cut V lettering was erroneously replaced by machine blast cut lettering. See digital photos. The stone has subsequently been recut and relettered, this time based on the size and style of lettering of other milestones in the set.

2010-2012. Repair work by the Milestone Society.
Milestone Society members initially up-righted and painted this milestone in 2010, however was professionally repaired in 2012. Once repaired it was painted and reinstalled in a new safer location with a French drain underneath.
