Full Description
Milestone marking Norwich 12 miles and New Buckenham 3 miles and also incorporating an OS benchmark. One of 14 surviving milestones along the former Norwich - New Buckenham turnpike. It was created in 1772 and ran from Ber Street Gates in Norwich to New Buckenham. It lasted for 98 years and was disturnpiked in 1870.
There are two types of milestone along this route but both types are wedge-shaped and contain incised lettering in a slightly indented panel. The other type of milestone has the distance to London also inscribed on it while this type doesn’t.
