Summary

During a watching brief in 2011 a number of long bones were recovered from a large pit which are likely to be the re-interred remains of previously disturbed graves. Another watching brief maintained during groundworks on the north side of the church in 2013 recorded no features of archaeological interest. There was though indirect evidence that this part of the cemetery had been well used, with deep soils present that contained many fragments of human bone - suggesting the repeated disturbance of earlier burials by subsequently excavated graves.

S. Howard (HES), 23 December 2011. Amended by P. Watkins (HES), 16 May 2019.

March-November 2013. Watching Brief.
Monitoring of groundworks associated with the construction of small extension on the north side of the church and the installation of an associated mains water supply and drainage system.
The graveyard soils proved to be particularly deep in this area, with natural geological deposits only encountered towards the base of a deep soakaway. None of the other excavations reached the base of the subsoil, including trenches dug to approximately 1m below present ground level.
No graves or other features were noted and finds were limited to approximately 150 fragments of disarticulated human bone.
See report (S2) for further details.
P. Watkins (HES), 2 September 2025.
