Full Description
One of 5 surviving milestones along the Norfolk section of the former Norwich to Blythburgh turnpike, with the Norfolk section running from Yarmouth to Beccles. This turnpike was set up in 1795-6 and operated until 1867.
These five milestones are wedge-shaped stones and are all in poor condition.
A series of milestones, all in the same style but in better condition, can be found along the road that runs North of the Suffolk border, from Beccles, via Bungay, to Harleston. This road could have been a later addition to the Yarmouth-Blythburgh turnpike. Similar milestones, but with the parish inscribed at the base, can be found on the road from Harleston to Scole.
