Map

One of 7 surviving milestones along the former Stoke Ferry turnpike, which was created in 1770 and ran from Stoke Ferry to Methwold and Cranwich, with branches also serving the estates of Barton, Oxborough and Cockley Cley. It was extended in 1791 to include Hockwold.

This milestone is the only one of its type on this turnpike, and is likely to have been placed as a replacement for a damaged or missing milestone, at the same time that a series of milestones were placed along the road from Mundford to Thetford, continuing on from the Stoke Ferry turnpike.

(S1) gives further information on this turnpike and the other milestones along it.
