Summary

On 14th May 1945 a P-51D Mustang from the US 339th Fighter Group crashed at this site. Its pilot had bailed out successfully. In 2014 a 40m corridor adjacent to the crash site was subject to a full UXO survey, this work being undertaken after an archaeological survey identified a group of munitions likely to have come from this plane. The UXO survey identified a cluster of munitions and metal objects close to the recorded crash site. Most of the latter was undiagnostic scraps, although several pieces could be identified as being from a P51 Mustang. The nature of this material and the generally low density of metal objects within the survey area suggests the bulk of the airframe was recovered following the crash.

July 2013-April 2014. Systematic Fieldwalking and Metal-detecting Survey.
Survey of proposed route of Dudgeon Offshore Windfarm onshore cable (Field 185).
The examination of a 40m-wide corridor along the eastern edge of this field was abandoned following the discovery of a small group of munitions in the vicinity of the Mustang crash site.
See report (S1) and NHER 60238 for further details.

September 2014. UXO Survey.
UXO Survey on proposed route of Dudgeon Offshore Windfarm onshore cable (Fields 185 and 186).
This survey was undertaken in order to identify and remove any ordnance present within the sections of the scheme corridor that would pass close to the Mustang crash site.
The survey recorded generally low levels of metal artefacts, although a denser cluster was identified close to the crash site itself. This comprised five objects identifiable as being from a P51 Mustang, munitions and 49 unidentifiable metal scraps. An isolated P51 Mustang part was also recovered in the south-east corner of the field. A cluster of eight metal objects identified in the field to the east were too deep to be investigated and were not necessarily associated with the crash site.
See report (S1) and NHER 60238 for further details.
P. Watkins (HES), 17 August 2023.
