Full Description
December 2011. Field visit.
Earthworks of ditches and trenches. Up to 2m wide and 0.5m deep. Some have a broad shallow profile; others are more straight sided with flat bases. Some appear to form circuits; others are sinuous and linear. They cut a parish boundary bank (HER 51535).
The ditches and trenches are most likely slit trenches of World War Two date.
D. Robertson (HES), 18 May 2012.
June 2019. Breckland National Mapping Programme.
The probable 20th century military trenches described above are visible as earthworks on imagery from a 2015 lidar survey (S1). They could be of Second World War date, as suggested above, but others mapped in the vicinity (such as NHER 63337, 140m to the south) have been interpreted as being of pre-Second World War date. It is probable that the earthworks still survive.
The monument polygon defining the site has been extended to include all the trenches visible on the lidar [1]; it incorporates the whole of the existing monument polygon, including areas where no features are visible on the lidar imagery, as additional features not visible on the lidar may have been encountered during the field visit described above. Some of the trench circuits have traces of internal banks, probably composed of upcast spoil from excavating the trenches. In several cases these were so poorly defined on the lidar that they have not been mapped.
S. Tremlett (Norfolk Historic Environment Service), 26 June 2019.
