NHER 54687 (Monument) - World War Two bomb crater

The earthworks of a probable World War Two bomb crater is visible on aerial photographs (S1-S2) to the north of Silfield. The site is centred on TM 1254 9966. This feature, which consists of a round pit surrounded by the characteristic ‘splash’ pattern of upcast appears to sitting on top of a low circular mound, giving the site the appearance of a gun emplacement. Although there is no other evidence of it being a gun emplacement, such as tracks or associated structures or activity. However, it seems most likely that the impact of the bomb crater has upwards and outward displacement the surrounding clay, creating a feature with the appearance of low mound. This crater is located to the southwest of Hethel World War Two airfield (NHER 9522) and to the northwest of a group of radar structures (NHER 54688) associated with the airfield.
