Summary

An area of probable medieval to post medieval earthwork boundaries and a possible trackway are visible on aerial photographs to the south of a former medieval moated site (NHER 9955), Wreningham. None of these earthwork boundaries were depicted on the available historical maps, but would appear to follow a similar pattern, forming divisions within fields that survive into the modern landscape and the remains of a probable track along the field edge. It was therefore decided not to map these features as part of the NMP assessment.

Map

April 2012. Norfolk NMP.
An area of probable medieval to post medieval earthwork boundaries and a possible trackway are visible on aerial photographs (S1-S5) to the south of a former medieval moated site (NHER 9955), Wreningham. The site is centred on TM 1435 9846, although the majority of the boundaries are located within the eastern part of the site. None of these earthwork boundaries were depicted on the available historical maps, but would appear to follow a similar pattern, forming divisions within fields that survive into the modern landscape and the remains of a probable track along the field edge. It was therefore decided not to map these features. Although these boundaries are located to the south of the moated site (NHER 9955) and former church of Little Wreningham or Nelonde (NHER 9942). It has also been suggested that a medieval settlement was associated with the church, see record summary, although this is far from certain from the description. The site of an unlocated medieval settlement (NHER 14458) is also recorded within the parish of Wreningham, although this is thought to have been associated with another medieval church. However it was felt that these boundaries were the remains of agricultural divisions and did not relate to settlement associated with either the church or the moated site.
