Summary

The cropmarks of enclosures, ditches and possible trackways of probable medieval to post medieval date are visible on aerial photographs. The site consists of a series of fragmentary enclosures and associated ditches and possible trackways, one of which appears to relate to a farmstead depicted on a Scottow estate map book from 1766. A number of the boundaries also follow a similar alignment to the boundaries depicted on the 1828 Enclosure Map, some of which are in part likely to be medieval in origin, and therefore the cropmarks may also relate to medieval enclosures and agricultural boundaries. However it may be worth noting that the morphology of parts of the eastern area of the site could also suggest a Roman date. Roman finds have been recovered from the wider area (for example NHER 39449, 39593, 40033). It is also worth noting that the site is on the same alignment as the Roman road (NHER 2796) approximately 850m to the north.

Map

March 2012.
The cropmarks of enclosures, ditches and possible trackways of probable medieval to post medieval date are visible on aerial photographs (S1-S2). The site is centred on TG 2749 2291. The site consists of a series of fragmentary enclosures and associated ditches and possible trackways. A number of these follow a similar alignment to the boundaries depicted on the 1766 'Map book of the estates of Davy Durrant of Scottow’ (S3) and the 1828 Enclosure Map (S4), although only one section of boundary appears to relate to depicted feature – a small farmstead at TG 2735 2294 on the 1766 map (S3). It is therefore likley that or all of these boundaries relate to medieval to post medieval land and property boundaries.
