Summary

An undated rectangular ditched enclosure, or possible medieval moat, is visible on aerial photographs to the east of Whitehall Farm, Wicklewood. It could relate to a record of a moat at Whitehall Farm (NHER 8909) 285m to the west, or of a building approximately 35m to the east (NHER 8911). To the south of this possible medieval moat, at least two clear areas of medieval ridge and furrow have been recorded (NHER 57448).

An undated rectangular ditched enclosure, or possible medieval moat, is visible on aerial photographs (S1-S3) to the east of Whitehall Farm, Wicklewood. It could relate to a record of a moat at Whitehall Farm (NHER 8909) 285m to the west, or of a building approximately 35m to the east (NHER 8911).
The site is centred on TG 0917 0372, and appears to have been affected by quarrying, so its precise form is difficult to guage. At the very least, the ditch appears to measure 85m by 47m internally, 95m by 61m externally. The possible moat, however contained potentially further internal subdivisions and perhaps a further ditch leading to the north from the moat. It is considered odd that the presumed northern corners of the moat are not showing as cropmarks or soilmarks on any of the available aerial photographs. To the south of this possible medieval moat, at least two clear areas of medieval ridge and furrow have been recorded (NHER 57448).
