Summary

Several phases of archaeological investigation were undertaken at this site prior to the laying of a new gas pipe. This programme of work comprised a geophysical survey, fieldwalking, a trial trench evaluation and a final watching brief. The geophysical survey identified a number of possible pits and a probable trackway. The trial trenching revealed what was most likely a former stream channel and a small pit. Both features produced domestic refuse, including sherds of medieval pottery. A range of unstratified finds were also recovered during the fieldwalking and the final watching brief. These finds included prehistoric worked flints, a Roman or medieval tile, and small quantities of medieval and post-medieval pottery and tile.

June 1998. Geophysical Survey.
Undertaken along route of proposed pipeline (Site 5). Part of large area subject to magnetic susceptibility survey. A magnetometer and resistivity survey was subsequently conducted along the route of pipeline through this field. This survey identified a probable pit or hearth near Church Lane, a possible trackway and several smaller pit-like anomalies.

November 1998. Fieldwalking.
Undertaken along route of proposed pipeline (Field 2/2). Finds recovered included:
1 Roman/medieval tile
6 medieval/post-medieval tiles
1 medieval/post-medieval brick
2 post-medieval pottery sherds
1 post-medieval tile
See (S2) for further details.

1999. Evaluation.
Four trenches were excavated in this field, along the route of the proposed pipeline (Site 5 Trenches 3-7). Within one of the evaluation trenches a single linear feature was recorded and extended along the whole length of the trench. The most likely interpretation for this feature is that it is a former stream channel and/or ponded area. The stream currently runs in a culvert immediately to the south and west of the trench. Finds typical of domestic rubbish were recovered from the fill of this feature and included pottery, animal bone, slag, flint, shell, grain and charcoal. Apart from some fish bones, there is nothing to suggest that this material was discarded when the feature was functioning as a stream channel. Most of the pottery sherds dated from the 13th or 14th centuries and included an assortment of unglazed jars and bowls, glazed jugs mostly of Grimston ware and a sherd from a Grimston ware face jug including an applied clay face. A single sherd of imported medieval pottery was also found.

A small oval pit (0.8m diameter) was recorded in the same trench as the former stream channel. This pit contained domestic rubbish, and was almost certainly medieval. It seems unlikely that such a small pit would have been deliberately excavated for the disposal of rubbish, and it seems more probable that it was originally a posthole for an upright timber. Two fragments of lava stone recovered from the fill of this feature may have been packing around the base of such a timber.

A small number of prehistoric flints were also recovered including two pieces of possible Mesolithic or Early Neolithic date (a blade and a soft-hammer struck flake). Other finds found included Roman and post medieval pottery sherds, potboilers and slag.
See (S3) for further details.

April to July 1999. Watching Brief.
Monitoring of groundworks associated with construction of Brisley to Bushy Common Pipeline (Plot 9). This work recovered a number of additional unstratified finds including:
1 Late Mesolithic/Early Neolithic 'cutting blade'
11 Neolithic/Bronze Age worked flints, including 1 piercer, 1 scraper and 9 flakes.
1 Late Saxon pottery sherd.
1 medieval tile.
14 medieval pottery sherds.
1 post-medieval pottery sherd.
See (S3) for details. This work was also reported in (S4).
