A large number of quarries of varying sizes are shown on Ordnance Survey maps, including the 1st edition 6 inch map (S1) and 2nd edition 25 inch map (S2). They were quarried for various materials, including sand, gravel and clay.
They include a number of quarries recorded as HER 26546 and 26561.
