Summary

Cropmarks of linear ditch features of unknown date are visible on aerial photographs on land to the north of Overa Heath, Quidenham. They are not visible on historic maps of the area, and are situated in an area which has produced large numbers of relatively high status Roman finds (NHER 22772, 13700, 21651 and 22771). It is possible, therefore, that they represent Roman activity, in the form of possible enclosures and/or trackways, and may represent a settlement site. It should also be noted, however, that they are situated in close proximity to two Bronze Age round barrows (NHER 6006 and 6007), and it is also possible that these features could be related to Bronze Age activity on the site. There is a ditch feature that cuts the site which has been dated to the medieval to post medieval period (NHER 57429), and it is also possible that these ditches may represent an earlier medieval to post medieval phase of activity.

Map

Cropmarks of linear ditch features of unknown date are visible on aerial photographs (S1) on land to the north of Overa Heath, Quidenham. The site is centred on TL 98778 88279, which is the focus for the Roman Samian ware pottery (NHER 13700).
It should also be noted, however, that they are situated in close proximity to two Bronze Age round barrows (NHER 6006 and 6007), and it is also possible that these features could be related to Bronze Age activity on the site. There is a ditch feature that cuts the site which has been dated to the medieval to post medieval period (NHER 57429), and it is also possible, although less likely, that these ditches may represent an earlier medieval to post medieval phase of activity.
Since they are only visible on one set of photographs it has been difficult to characterise and date these features more confidently. They are also showing in an unusual 'reversed' way, and it is diffcult to be certain of their nature.
