Summary

Vegetation and crop marks of former ditches and former field boundaries, mostly of probable medieval to post medieval date, are visible on aerial photographs within the southern part of Coltishall airfield. Many of the features appear to relate boundaries depicted on the 1841 Coltishall Tithe map or run either perpendicular or parallel to that phase of field division. Numerous field drains were clearly visible within this area in 1999 and it is feasible that some of the ditch-like features mapped, in particular the parallel linears, represent further parts of modern drainage schemes.

Map

August 2012.
Vegetation and crop marks of former ditches and former field boundaries, mostly of probable medieval to post medieval date, are visible on aerial photographs within the southern part of Coltishall airfield (S1-S3). The site is centred on TG 2588 2157. Many of the features appear to relate boundaries depicted on the 1841 Coltishall Tithe map or run either perpendicular or parallel to that phase of field division (S4). Numerous field drains were clearly visible within this area in 1999 (S1) and it is feasible that some of the ditch-like features mapped, in particular the parallel linears, represent further parts of modern drainage schemes. Although historic maps would indicate that many of these features relate to medieval to post medieval boundaries, it is worth noting that some of the boundaries are also aligned the same as other significant boundaries and field systems in this area that are tentatively interpreted as being later prehistoric and/or Roman in date (NHER 57987-8 for example).
