Summary

This is the churchyard of St Mary's Church (NHER 12903). Watching briefs maintained during drainage works in 2011/2012 and 2016 revealed little of interest, largely due to the relatively shallow nature of the trenches excavated. Post-medieval pottery was found by chance here in 2012.

Map

Churchyard of St Mary's Church (NHER 12903).

December 2011-January 2012. Watching Brief.
Monitoring of groundworks associated with installation of new arch drain within churchyard to west of church. The trenches dug revealed no archaeologically-significant remains, although it should be noted that none were sufficiently deep to encounter any burials that might be present. A water pipe trench dug immediately to the west of the church encountered layers containing building rubble – potentially debris from the rebuilding of the tower in 1674.
No finds were recovered.
See report (S1) for further details.

June 2016. Watching Brief.
Monitoring of groundworks associated with installation of new storm water drainage system.
Narrow, relatively shallow drainage trenches excavated to the north of the church uncovered no archaeologically-significant remains. The excavation of two areas within the churchyard’s northern boundary ditch also revealed nothing of interest.
No finds were recovered.
See report (S2) for further details.
