Full Description
Pre May 1877. Stray Find.
On 1 May 1877 R. Fitch exhibited a "Neolithic flint implement, found on the Lighthouse-hill at Cromer" at a meeting of the Norfolk and Norwich Archaeological Society (S1). Information from (S2).
This object does not appear to be part of the Norwich Castle Museum's Fitch Collection.
Amended by P. Watkins (HES), 10 July 2014.
Pre 1929. Stray Find.
In 1929 J. Reid Moir reported a number of what he believed to be Palaeolithic implements that had been recovered from the "cannon-shot gravels" exposed along the North Norfolk coast (S3). These objects were found by Reid Moir, J. E. Sainty and G. Maynard as part of research funded by the Percy Sladen Trust and including three found on Lighthouse Hill, "…where the deposit is to be seen at the very top of the cliff, and resting about 200 feet above the beach level". These three implements, which are illustrated in (S3), are described as a chopper or handaxe, a 'point' and a scraper. It should be noted that Wymer (S4) raised doubts about the majority of the objects published in (S3), although the finds from Lighthouse Hill are not the ones he regarded as the most dubious.
P. Watkins (HES), 10 July 2014.
It should be noted that the mapped extent of this record reflects the reported location of the flints described in (S3). The exact location of the 1877 discovery is not known (although it was presumably within or close to this area.
P. Watkins (HES), 10 July 2014.
