Summary

Excavation in advance of redevelopment recorded a large medieval pit and an undated post hole to the north of Greyfriars House. The pit appears to have been waterlogged, but its function remains uncertain. This area is low-lying and the earliest deposit sequence oberved during excavation indicates that this area changed from salt marsh to fresh water as ground levels rose, but it is uncertain whether any of the sediment desposition was the result of human activity. It appears to have remained peripheral to any human activity.

Evaluation of proposed development site.
Features recorded included a large medieval pit and an undated post hole to the north of Greyfriars House. The deposits within the pit indicate that it had been waterlogged and it is possible that it was associated with an activity requiring water. The primary fill contained 13th to 14th century pottery, while a residual sherd of 17th to 18th century pottery was recoverd from the deposits near the top of the pit.
The earliest deposit sequence at this site indicates that this area changed from salt marsh to fresh water as ground levels rose, but it is uncertain whether any of the sediment deposition was the result of human activity. It appears to have been peripheral to any human activity.
