Full Description
January 2013. Norfolk NMP.
The cropmarks of a rectilinear enclosure of probable medieval to post medieval date, although a Roman date is also tentatively suggested, is visible on aerial photographs to the north of original route of the Ellingham Road (S1-S2). The site is centred on TM 0321 9625.
The site consists of either a rectilinear enclosure and/or field boundaries abutting the road. The enclosure/land allotment is aligned the same as the surrounding medieval to post medieval boundaries, although it would appear to be cut by those depicted on the 1838 Attleborough Tithe map (S3), suggesting that it may relate to an earlier phase of medieval to post medieval enclosure. However the nearby presence of Roman building material (NHER 9095) nearby must be noted and a Roman date for the cropmarks could feasibly be suggested. See also NHER 58563 for discussion of a possible Roman road branching off to the northeast from recorded section of probable Roman road (NHER 33952) near Attleborough Hall.
