Full Description
An 18th century red brick former house (now a shop). To the right of No. 6 there is a Perp doorway with carved spandrels leading to the yard behind 2-6 St Andrews Hill. Above this doorway, but not in situ, is a traceried overlight. Information from (S1). This medieval door surround is a Scheduled Monument.
February 1954. Listed, Grade II.
Shop. 18th century. Red brick on flint plinth with stone capping and end quoins. Roof not visible. 3 storeys. 5 bays. Central door with moulded surround and flat hood. Yard entry at extreme right with mediaeval timber door surround having carved spandrels and traceries rectangular fanlight. 20th century casements at ground floor. First floor sash windows with glazing bars and rubbed brick flat arches. Casements at 2nd floor. Blind windows in central bay. Bracket cornice. The timber door surround only is listed as an Ancient Monument. Information from (S2).
It should be noted that this building appears to be incorrectly numbered in the listing description as No 8 St Andrew's Hill.
1981. Norwich Survey.
Visited as part of Norwich Survey. See record sheets in file (S3) for copy of 1st Edition OS map, brief description and copy of photograph of exterior. Described as being one room deep, with interior gutted throughout. One early 19th-century fireplace does however survive on ground floor. Top floor has long, fourteen light frieze window on rear. The timber gate to the right of the property is described as an elaborate, re-used 15th century door entry with pierced tracery fanlight.
July 1993. Site visit.
No.6 has on rear elevation some blocked windows predating existing ones; some knapped and squared flints, reset, and several reused pieces of medieval ashlar, one with elaborate mouldings. The top storey is later, of red brick with a long weaving window. Adjacent to No.6 is a medieval timber door and openwork grille, reset on alley from another location.
E. Rose (NLA) 8 July 1993.
2000. Norwich UAD.
It appears no attempt has been made to conserve the wood tracery of the door surround or to repair part of the broken fanlight.
