Summary

A medieval moated site with a post medieval house (NHER 7009) on the internal platform. The moat is revetted with a medieval flint wall and the surviving bridge may date to the 16th or 17th centuries, as could the fishponds to the southeast. Both are depicted on the Tithe Map, and the moat surrounding the hall and two of the three fishponds to the southeast are visible on aerial photographs, along with cropmarks and earthworks of other possible features surrounding the hall.

Map

February 2013. Norfolk NMP.
A medieval moated site with a post medieval house (NHER 7009) on the internal platform. The moat is revetted with a medieval flint wall and the surviving bridge may date to the 16th or 17th centuries, as could the fishponds to the southeast. Both are depicted on the Tithe Map (S4), and the moat surrounding the hall and some of the fishponds to the southeast are visible on aerial photographs (S1-S3), along with cropmarks and earthworks of other possible features surrounding the hall.
To the northeast of the hall, a further possible moat or fishpond is visible, centred on TM 0516 9629, with a raised platform in the centre, measuring approximately 31m by 38m. The possible ‘moat’ or ditch is visible as a light coloured soilmark, however, which may indicate that the earthwork has been filled in with different material (S3). A further raised area or bank is also visible directly to the north (S1), which appears to be spread by the plough on later photographs (S3).
To the northwest of the hall, cropmarks of possible field boundaries are visible, which may also be contemporary with the hall site, and a raised area visible as an earthwork (S2) centred on TM 0502 9636 may indicate further activity during this period.
The relationship of this site with the possible Roman Road (NHER 33952) and a second medieval moated site to the east (NHER 1056) is of interest.
E. Bales (NMP), 27th February 2013.
