Summary

The Norwich Castle Museum's Fitch Collection includes a Late Upper Palaeolithic flint blade core that is recorded as having been found between "Thorpe Station and Trowse". This is probably a reference to Trowse Millgate, suggesting this object was most likely found somewhere in the area around Carrow. A number of other Late Upper Palaeolithic worked flints have been found in this area, including in situ scatters that were uncovered at Carrow Road (26602).

Pre 1984. Stray Find.
The Norwich Castle Museum Fitch Collection includes an object described as a "Neolithic flint implement" that is marked as having been found "in field between Thorpe Station and Trowse…turned out among the soil in the excavation for the railway" (NWHCM : 1894.76.996). This had originally been identified as Palaeolithic, but according to the museum's records the Fitch Catalogue has a handwritten pencil note querying whether this is in fact a "flint nuclei rather than an artefact" and another re-dating the implement as Neolithic. This object is however listed in (S1) as a Late Upper Palaeolithic blade core with two opposed platforms.

Although the museum's records list this object as being from Trowse, it was most likely recovered in an area that is now entirely within Norwich. Thorpe Station is the original name for what is now the main (and only) train station in Norwich, while the "Trowse" referred to is most likely Trowse Mill (TG 243 070) rather than Trowse with Newton (which lies on the opposite bank of the River Yare). This object was therefore most likely found somewhere in the vicinity of Carrow. See NHER 39499 for information on other unprovenanced Palaeolithic finds from the Carrow area.
