Summary

Earthwork feature initially identified as an old gravel pit. A rapid earthwork identification survey undertaken in 2008 suggested that this feature is actually the remains of an enclosure of probable mid 19th-century date. A pit of uncertain function was identified nearby, although this was not thought to be related to the enclosure.

Map

Pit on Edgefield Heath. 1 mile west of the Holt to Edgefield road, a little north of the 20th milestone, 9m (10 yards) across and 2.4m (8 feet) deep, simply an old gravel pit (S1).
R. R. Clarke (NCM).

December 2008. Earthwork Rapid Identification Survey.
Site 1:
Previously recorded feature now described as a probable gravel pit now described as a banked and ditched enclosure with two internal depressions (the former gravel pits). The enclosure abuts the boundary with the B114 road c.50m in diameter with a bank up to 0.7m high with internal flanking ditches. In the north-east are two steep-sided depressions, one oval of c.14 x 10m, the other c.7m in diameter with both being c.2m deep. The larger has a possible access ramp on its north-east edge. The Holt Lodge Estate Sale Particulars map of 1854 marks this enclosure as belonging to or at least being used by the Surveyors of Highways. It is thus considered to be of mid-19th century origin. It does not appear on the ordnance survey 1st edition 6 inch map of 1891.

Site 8:
A near-circular flat-bottomed 0.3m deep depression of maximum 6m diameter with a narrow encircling bank up to 0.5m high, with a possible access from the north-west. It is located c.10m from the south-west corner of Site 1, but is not thought to be associated. The bank is sufficiently well-preserved to suggest a post-medieval if not modern origin. Possibly of military origin, but other similar features might have been expected nearby, therefore the date and function are unknown.

See report (S1) for further details.
