Full Description
1976 - 1978. Fieldwalking.
A general scatter of pottery was collected from the surface of the field, including two possible roman sherds, one Thetford and one St Neots sherd, 19 medieval and a further 27 sherds of possible medieval date, 14 sherds of transitional ware, and a considerable amount of post medieval pottery.
A notable concentration of medieval (17 definite and 37 probably), transitional (13), and post medieval pottery sherds as well as post medieval brick, tile and ironwork was recorded in the northwest corner (S1, site 1 Area A). Local farmworkers reported that a brick floor was ploughed up here just after World War II. Locals have also reported finds of keys, locks, and a hub-cap for a carriage wheel along with other metalwork, suggesting the site of a smithy.
A small concentration of post medieval pottery was recorded along with three earlier pieces in the northeastern corner of the field (S1, site 1 Area B). This may be the location of a house.
Approximately 50 pieces of 14th to 15th century pottery sherds and a few later sherds were recorded just to the west of the post medieval concentration (S1, site 1 Area C). Additional medieval sherds were collected from this area during cultivation.
A smaller scatter of post medieval pottery was recorded in the southeast of the field (S1, site 1 Area D).
Information from (S1) and (S2). See also (S3).
