Summary

A collection of stray finds recovered between 2013 and 2021 while gardening on allotments comprises a number of prehistoric worked flints, including a possible early Mesolithic arrowhead and a core; Roman, Late Saxon/medieval, medieval, medieval/post-medieval and post-medieval pottery sherds; post-medieval clay tobacco pipe; animal bone and oyster shell; undatable burnt flint and metalworking debris and a post-medieval buckle. The relatively large quantity of medieval pottery sherds recovered from such a small area suggests that a settlement was near or on the site. The area is likely part of crofts associated with dwellings sited along either the main road through Mattishall, to the south of the site, or along Burgh Lane, to the east of the site.
