Summary

A fieldwalking survey in 2011 identified evidence of human activity in this area from the Neolithic to the post-medieval period. Worked flint recovered from this area includes cores, blades, and scrapers, and the assemblage has been identified as broadly Neolithic to Early Bronze Age date. The flint finds were primarily concentrated along the northern and western edges of this field and represent the outer limits of a wider concentration noted in the field to the north-west (NHER 61471). Only five sherds of Roman pottery were recovered and no Saxon objects were identified, but medieval and post-medieval activity is represented by small to moderate quantities of pottery, roof tile, brick, pantile, and clay pipe fragments. This material was likely deposited by night soiling, and an unusually high proportion of 17th to early 19th century high status wares within the post-medieval assemblage indicates that the night soil from this period may have originated from Norwich or possibly from a nearby inn. A high concentration of 19th century pottery was recovered from the south-west corner of this field, and only 19th century clay pipe fragments were recovered. Metal-detecting between 2016 and 2020 recovered a post-medieval coin; undated copper alloy casting waste and a number of other, medieval to post-medieval metal objects. These metal finds include medieval to post-medieval dress accessories; a medieval/post-medieval purse bar and loop, copper alloy rings, a copper alloy vessel repair and a lead weight.

Map

March-April 2011. Fieldwalking. Field 3.
A wide range of finds dating from the Neolithic to the post medieval period were recovered during a systematic field survey which included eight fields on the northern and eastern edge of Hethersett.
Flint finds from this field included three cores, 71 flakes, and three blades. This assemblage has been broadly dated to the Neolithic or Early Bronze Age and was largely concentrated along the northern and western edges of the field. This represents the edges of a concentration of flint finds recovered from Field 2 (NHER 61471) to the north-west.
Roman finds were limited to five sherds of 2nd to 3rd century pottery.
A small quantity of medieval pottery, primarily medieval sandy ware, was identified as well as a moderate quantity of post-medieval pottery. As with Field 2 to the north-west, the post-medieval assemblage contained an unusually high proportion of 17th to early 19th century high-status wares that could indicate night-soiling from Norwich or possibly from a nearby inn. Additional evidence of activity during this period included a small quantity of medieval to post medieval roof tile, floor or wall tile, and brick, as well as late 17th to early 18th century pantile. A high concentration of 19th century pottery was recovered from the south-west corner of the field, and unlike the other survey areas, only 19th century clay pipe fragments were recovered.
Metal-detecting yielded a small quantity of objects in the majority of the studied fields, but there was a notably high concentration on the western edge of this field. These have not been reported in detail, but generally consisted of typical post medieval to modern night soiling and agricultural debris.
