Full Description
March-April 2011. Fieldwalking. Field 7.
A wide range of finds dating from the Neolithic to the post medieval period were recovered during a systematic field survey which covered eight fields on the northern and eastern edge of Hethersett.
The flint assemblage from this field has been broadly dated to the Neolithic or Early Bronze Age and consists of one core, 104 flakes, and 9 blades.
Roman activity was represented by two sherds of possible 2nd to 3rd century pottery, and only one sherd of Late Saxon pottery was recovered.
A small quantity of medieval pottery was collected along with moderate quantities of medieval to post medieval roof tile and brick. The pottery is primarily medieval sandy ware and was mostly concentrated in the southern portion of the field, similar to the field to the west (NHER 21862).
A moderate quantity of post-medieval pottery was also recovered, including an unusually high proportion of 17th to early 19th century high-status wares, clay pipe fragments, and late 17th to early 18th century pantile. The proliferation of high status wares likely indicates night-soiling from Norwich or a nearby inn.
Metal-detecting yielded a small quantity of objects in the majority of the studied fields. These have not been reported in detail, but generally consisted of typical post medieval to modern night soiling and agricultural debris.
