Summary

Archaeological work at this site between 2011 and 2016 identified little in the way of significant remains. An initial geophysical survey undertaken in 2011 revealed two linear anomalies that correspond with former field boundaries depicted on 19th-century maps and a possible former pond. Subsequent trial trenching at the northern edge of the site in 2016 recorded several additional ditches that potentially represented earlier phases of activity, although no dating evidence was recovered. A series of linear features on similar alignments to the post-medieval ditches were probably the result of medieval to post-medieval agricultural activity.

Map

March 2011. Geophysical survey. Field 8.
Magnetometer survey recorded two linear anomalies, one running east-west and one north-south, which correspond to field boundaries depicted on the Hethersett tithe map (S1) and the Ordnance Survey First Edition map (S2). A magnetic disturbance at the junction of the two former field boundaries also likely indicates a former pond with a large concentration of iron scrap within the back-fill.
The only other magnetic responses were caused by modern features.
See report (S3) for further information.

January-February 2016. Trial Trenching.
Evaluation of part of large proposed development site (Area 1, Trenches 71-88).
The eighteen trenches excavated at this location revealed a number of linear features. Several were ditches, including two north-to-south aligned features that correspond with former field boundaries depicted on the Hethersett tithe map (S1) (one of which had also been detected by the preceding geophysical survey). Both produced single fragments of medieval/post-medieval ceramic building material. Several other ditches on different alignments were potentially associated with one or more earlier phase of activity, although their date is uncertain as a single prehistoric flint flake was the only other find recovered.
The majority of the linear features recorded were relatively narrow, shallow remains, many of which occurred in fairly tightly grouped, parallel clusters. These were similar to features identified to the south-west (NHER 65025) and were interpreted as probable cultivation furrows. Their date is uncertain, although their alignment suggests they were mostly likely the result of medieval to post-medieval agricultural activity.
No unstratified finds were recovered.
See report (S4) for further details.
