Full Description
1992.
Cropmarks of rectangular enclosures on Ordnance Survey air photograph; the edges of the cropmark complex coincides precisely with the edge of the scatter as marked. Copy in file.
Previously recorded under NHER 28651.
B. Cushion (NLA) and E. Rose (NLA), 5 August 1994. Amended by P. Watkins (HES), 10 December 2013.
September 2024. Northwest Norfolk Aerial Investigation and Mapping (AI&M) Project.
The cropmarks of a possible rectilinear enclosure (see above) of an unknown date are visible on aerial photographs (S2-S4). A dense scatter of Roman pottery (NHER 28651) has been previously recovered in the vicinity of the cropmarks. It has been previously suggested that the density of the recovered Roman pottery may indicate the site of settlement (see NHER 28651). It is therefore possible that the enclosure could be Roman in date. The Ordnance Survey aerial photograph (S1) discussed above was unavailable at the time of recording. The copy of the photographs mentioned above was also not of a high enough quality to be able to record from. It is presumed that the enclosure mapped by this project (visible on S2-S4) is the same feature as discussed above. However, it is possible that the feature recorded from (S1) may relate to a separate possible enclosure not visible on the sources consulted as part of this project. The cropmarks of a linear ditch feature (centred at approximately TF 7018 3004) are also visible on (S2) and (S3). The feature most likely relates to a modern field drain and has therefore not been mapped.
