Map

This record details archaeologically significant material recovered during off-shore dredging within Aggregates Extraction Licence Area 319. These discoveries were reported to English Heritage/English Heritage through the Marine Aggregate Industry Protocol for Reporting Finds of Archaeological Interest. See (S1) and (S2) for further details.

21 February 2009. Off-shore Dredging.
1 post-medieval metal deadlight/storm cover. Definitely a ships fitting and therefore very likely to come from a wreck within the dredging area. Mid 19th century or later.
1 modern copper fixture/fitting. The presence of a sticker suggests that this object had not been in the sea for long.
1 undatable unidentified metal object.
See Discovery Report (S3) and reporting protocol annual report (S4) for further details. The modern copper object is also featured in the Autumn 2009 edition of the protocol's newsletter (S14), in which it is described as a flagpole finial. The probable deadlight was featured in the Spring 2018 issue, in a piece on items that went on display at Littlehampton in 2017.
J. Page (HES), 9 January 2014.

Pre 8 May 2009. Off-shore Dredging.
2 modern metal aircraft fragments. Both probable aluminium aircraft parts. The make, model and function of these parts was unascertainable
See Discovery Report (S5) and reporting protocol annual report (S4) for further details.
J. Page (HES), 13 January 2014.

Pre 31 October 2009. Off-shore Dredging.
Found at Cemex's Northfleet Wharf:
1 Palaeolithic probable mammoth tusk.
See reporting protocol annual report (S7) for further details. Discovery Report awaited.
P. Watkins (HES), 16 November 2025.

Pre 23 December 2009. Off-shore Dredging.
Found at CEMEX's Angerstein Wharf:
1 ?Palaeolithic animal bone. Red Deer left metatarsus. May have begun to fossilise.
See Discovery Report (S6) and reporting protocol annual report (S7) for further details.
P. Watkins (HES), 30 March 2016.

Pre 22 March 2010. Off-shore Dredging.
Found on board the Sand Falcon:
Several ship timbers. These are believed to be from a wooden carvel built vessel.
See Discovery Report (S8) and reporting protocol annual report (S7) for further details.
J. Page (HES), 14 January 2014.

Pre 19 May 2011. Off-shore Dredging.
Found at Angerstein Charlton Wharf:
1 ?post-medieval piece of ship's timber.
See reporting protocol annual report (S13) for further details.
P. Watkins (HES), 16 November 2025.

August 2012. Off-shore Dredging.
Found during monitoring of material delivered to Cemex's Northfleet Wharf:
1 post-medieval/modern wood and wrought iron pulley block. Due to the metal components in this particular block it was probably made either during or after the 19th century.
See Discovery Report (S9) and reporting protocol annual report (S10) for further details.
J. Page (HES), 28 January 2014

Pre 30 July 2013. Off-shore Dredging.
Found on board the Sand Falcon:
9 undatable fossil bones. Two are long bones and the others are potentially teeth. The partial nature of these remains makes identification from photographs impossible.
1 undatable stone with ?smelt on one surface. An unusual object. Possible natural or it may be that this stone came into contact with smelt during a metalworking process.
1 undatable unidentified iron object. Probably wrought rather than cast.
1 undatable cork net float.
See Discovery Report (S11) and reporting protocol annual report (S12) for further details. The cork float is one of a number of objects featured in the Autumn 2013 issue of the scheme's newsletter (S15).
J. Page (HES), 28 January 2014.
