Summary

Six trial trenches were excavated in this area in 1999. This work revealed several features that were probably part of a palaeochannel and a number of undated features including pits, post-holes, gullies and a ditch. One of the plaeochannel features produced burnt flints and Neolithic worked flints. Unstatified finds recovered include additional Neolithic worked flints and a medieval or post-medieval roof tile.

Map

May-July 1999. Trial Trenching.
Excavation of six trenches (Trenches 31, 33-36 and 38).
A number of archaeologically significant features were identified in the north-easternmost trench (Trench 38). A large silt-filled feature has been interpreted as a palaeochannel. Two discrete dumps of material were identified within the fills of this feature, both of which contained burnt flint 'pot boilers'. Neolithic worked flints (3 flakes and 1 blade) were also recovered from one of these deposits.
A number of undated features were identifed close to this channel, including a narrow gully, two post-holes, a ditch and two shallow, intercutting pits.
Features excavated in the other trenches included an undated gully, an undated pit and an undated ditch. Although no dating evidence was recovered it was suggested that these features may have been prehistoric. Two additional silt-filled ?palaeochannels were also identified.
Unstratified finds recovered included:
1 Neolithic flint piercer, 1 blade core, 1 flake and 1 retouched flake.
1 medieval/post-medieval roof tile.
1 undatable fragment of lead ?spillage (glass fragments visible on one side).
