Summary

In 1957 preparation of this site for The Fifty Shilling Tailors discovered two medieval wells. One was found near the southwest corner and extended to about 100m below street level and the other was found a short distance from the southern limit of the site. This second well was unlined and dug into the natural chalk.

1957. At junction with The Gentleman's Walk in preparing site for The Fifty Shilling Tailors.
1. Well found near southwest corner of site about 1.07cm (3ft 6in) diameter and extending to about 100m (18ft 6in) below street level, circular.
2. Well found about 6.1m (20ft) north from south limit of deep excavation - unlined and dug into natural chalk the top of which lies at around 3.7m (12ft) below modern surface.
