Summary

Originally reported as a pillbox it is likely that this structure was actually a World War Two Home Guard store. It has brick walls and a reinforced concrete roof and appears to be identical in form to a number of Home Guard equipment and ammunition stores recorded elsewhere in the county.

Map

Location of pillbox reported by [1] which appears on modern mapping. Date and type to be determined.
A. Yardy (HES), 4 August 2014.

8 January 2023. Field Observation.
Visited by P. Watkins (HES).
This small rectangular structure has a flat concrete roof and brick walls. There is a door in the east wall and two small rectangular windows in the opposite west wall, immediately below the roof. There is no door but the remains of a wooden door frame suggests one was present at some point. The reinforced concrete roof bears the traces of the timber shuttering used during its construction.
The structure appears to be largely sound, although its exterior is now virtually entirely obscured by ivy.
This is clearly not a pillbox. It was most likely a Home Guard store, being identical to a number of basic Home Guard equipment and ammunition stores recorded elsewhere in the county (see for example NHERs 30780, 31142, 32390 and 65745).
See photographs (S1).
P. Watkins (HES), 9 January 2022.
