Full Description
February-March 2014. Metal-detecting. [1].
Late Saxon coin hoard consisting of 3 silver coins. All are pennies of Edward the Elder and almost certainly represent part of a hoard deposited around AD 925. As the coins were recovered at the site of the deserted settlement of Wilby (NHER 29582) it is likely that they had been concealed close to their owner's home.
Information from PAS import.
These coins were declared Treasure on 21 December 2015 (Ref: 2014 T769) but returned to the finder as a museum was unable to acquire them.
E. Darch (HES), 4 January 2016. Amended by A. Beckham (HES), 5 September 2016 and P. Watkins (HES), 18 May 2024.
December 2019 and April 2021. Metal-detecting. [2].
From same location at 2014 finds:
4 Late Saxon silver coins - all portrait-type pennies of Edward the Elder. These coins are an addendum to the hoard recovered in 2014, which put the total for the hoard at 7 coins. The likely date of deposition for the hoard is unchanged (c. AD 925).
Information from PAS import.
These coins were declared Treasure at inquest (Ref: 2020T219) but returned to the finder as a museum was unable to acquire them.
P. Watkins (HES), 14 April 2024.
