Full Description
June 2014. Trial Trenching.
Six trial trenches were excavated in advance of demolition of existing buildings and construction of new dwellings.
Archaeological features were limited to a single linear ditch located at the south-eastern edge of the investigated area and oriented north-east to south-west. The lower fill of the ditch contained animal bone and mineralised plant stem fragments. The plant stems have been identified as large grasses (Poaceae) such as bamboo or maize. Bamboo was introduced to the UK in the 18th-19th century and maize was not introduced until the 20th century, indicating a post-medieval date for the ditch.
The orientation of this feature is similar to a set of double-ditched trackways or drove roads and rectangular field boundaries located immediately to the south of this site (NHER 18236). The features to the south were identified as cropmarks visible in aerial photographs and are believed to be of Roman date. The ditch recorded here does not appear to have been manifested as a cropmark.
