Summary

A trial trench evaluation undertaken prior to the the development of this site identifed a possible prehistoric buried soil and a potentially prehistoric linear feature. A previously identified mound was shown to be a natural feature (NHER 23235). Two subsequent watching briefs failed to identify any archaeologically significant features.

1 October 1996. Trial Trenching.
Evaluation in advance of erection of horticultural glasshouses.
Two blank trenches in north part of site. North to south trench over suspected barrow. 'Mound-like' appearance explained by rise in underlying geology but one linear feature excavated producing handful of flints. Also possible buried soil surviving under deeper peat.
