Summary

In January 2004 a systematic fieldwalking and metal-detecting survey recovered undatable prehistoric worked flints; medieval and post-medieval pottery sherds; medieval/post-medieval and post-medieval tiles; post-medieval tobacco pipe fragments; post-medieval coins and a number of other post-medieval and undatable metal objects. A concentration of iron slag was also identified within a dark soilmark close to the southern edge of the field. A number of undated features were identified during a subsequent trial trenching evaluation. A small amount of iron smelting slag was recovered, along with prehistoric worked flints and a number of post-medieval objects.

October 2004 and June 2006. Trial Trenching.
Evaluation of proposed route of new quarry haul road (Trenches 10-12).
Of the three trenches excavated in this field, two revealed archaeologically significant evidence.
The trench at the southern end of the field (Trench 10) contained a large natural depression, the excavation of which exposed a tree throw hollow, the probable terminus of a gully and a ditch; none of which produced any clear dating evidence. A fragment of iron smelting slag was recovered from the gully terminus and other fragment was retrieved from one of the overlying deposits.
The trench in the centre of the field (Trench 11) also contained a large depression of probable natural origin, the fills of which produced a small number of prehistoric worked flints.
A number of post-medieval finds were recovered from recent agricultural features and unstratified deposits.
See report (S2) for further details.
P. Watkins (HES), 21 May 2015.
