Summary

The earthwork of an oval hollow measuring about 30m by 25m was identified during a field visit. It may have been excavated as a quarry for sand and gravel or a marl pit for chalk. The pit is also visible on visualised lidar data from a survey flown in 2015, and it is probable that the earthwork still survives. It is one of several identified in the area, and their relatively well-defined character on the lidar visualisations suggests that they are small extraction pits of relatively recent, probably post-medieval or 20th century. In this case, this interpretation is supported by its depiction on a historical Ordnance Survey map.

The post-medieval pit described above is visible as an earthwork on visualised lidar data (S2). It is one of several identified in the area, and their relatively well-defined character on the lidar visualisations suggests that they are small extraction pits of relatively recent, probably post medieval or 20th century, date. In this case, this interpretation is supported by its depiction on a historical Ordnance Survey map (S1). As the lidar survey was flown relatively recently, it is probably that the earthwork still survives.
The mapped extent of this feature has been refined [1].
