Summary

A trial trench evaluation undertaken between December 2009 and January 2010 revealed a number of ditches, gullies and pits of probable later Roman date. Many of the linear features correspond with previously identified cropmarks features (NHER 49204) thought to be associated with the Burgh Castle Roman vicus. The finds recovered included box flue tile and other Roman ceramic building material.

Map

December 2009-January 2010. Trial Trenching.
Evaluation of site of proposed static caravan park redevelopment.
This work revealed a number of ditches, including several that were possibly sections of two long rectangular enclosures. At least three of the ditches appear to coincide with previously identified linear cropmarks (NHER 49205), although several other cropmarks mapped that this location were found to have no associated sub-surface remains.
Seventeen pits and post-holes were also revealed.
The pottery recovered from a number of these features suggested that many were probably of later Roman date. Notably a range of Roman ceramic building material was also recovered, including roof tiles and box flue tiles; suggesting the presence nearby of at least one fairly substantial structure.
Features of probable post-Roman date were limited to a post-medieval gully and a modern pit.
See report (S1) for further information.
