Summary

Metal-detecting at this location between 2014 and 2021 recovered six pennies of William I and William II. Although initially thought to potentially represent a single hoard it is now thought these represent three distinct groups of coins (some or all of which may have been purse losses).

Location

Map sheet TF92SW
Civil Parish STANFIELD, BRECKLAND, NORFOLK

November 2014-May 2015. Metal-detecting. [1].
Possible medieval coin hoard, consisting of a penny and cut halfpenny of William I. These coins were minted c.1068-1070 and are unlikely to have been lost or deposited very many years later. The presence of a cut halfpenny suggests this was probably a purse loss.
Information from PAS import.
These coins were donated to Norwich Castle Museum after being disclaimed as Treasure (Ref: 2015 T547).
E. McDonald (HES), 1 February 2018. Amended by P. Watkins (HES), 22 April 2025.

January-November 2015. Metal-detecting. [1].
Possible medieval coin hoard consisting of 2 fragmentary pennies of William II. Initially treated as a potential first addendum to the possible hoard discovered in 2014/2015.
Information from PAS import.
These coins were disclaimed as Treasure (Ref: 2016 T1049) and subsequently donated to Norwich Castle Museum.
A. Beckham (HES), 17 December 2015. Amended by E. McDonald (HES), 1 February 2018 and P. Watkins (HES), 22 April 2025.

November 2019-April 2021. Metal-detecting. [2].
Possible medieval coin hoard comprising 2 coins of William I (complete penny and unreadable fragment). Initially treated as a second potential addendum to the possible hoard discovered in 2014/2015.
Information from PAS import.
These coins were returned to the finder after being disclaimed as Treasure (Ref: 2021 T898).
E. McDonald (HES), 7 June 2021 and P. Watkins (HES), 26 January 2025.

Although finding six pennies of William I and William II in one field is of considerable interest it is no longer thought that these coins potentially represent a single hoard. They are now interpreted as three distinct groups.
See correspondence (S1).
A. Beckham (HES), 26 January 2022. Amended by P. Watkins (HES), 22 April 2025.
