Summary

In 2009 a number of trial trenches were excavated in this field in order to investigate the nature of previously identified cropmark features. Trenches excavated across the possible line of a Roman road (NHER 52126) failed to identify any clear evidence for a road, although a potentially related area of compact ground was noted in one trench. This compact deposit was associated with a small amount of Iron Age pottery. A number of undated pits and ditches were identified elsewhere in this field. Several of the pits coincided with cropmarks that had been thought to represent an area of medieval or post-medieval aggregate extraction (NHER 52127).

December 2009. Trial Trenching.
Evaluation of site on proposed line of Norwich Northern Distributor Road (Site S6).
Ten trenches were excavated in this field, a number of which were placed to investigate previously identified cropmark features. These included three trenches that were placed across the line of undated linear bank features that may represent the route of a Roman road (NHER 52126). Although no features or deposits provided direct evidence for the presence of a Roman road, a potentially related area of compact natural ground was however observed in one of the trenches. A small amount of Iron Age pottery was recovered from this this area and additional sherds were recovered from a natural feature and an unstratified context.
At the northern end of the field a number of trenches were placed to investigate a series of features thought to be associated with medieval or post-medieval extraction. A number of pits were observed suggesting that this interpretation was correct. No dating evidence was recovered.
Other features identified during this evaluation included a number of undated ditches and pits.
See report (S3) for further details. The results of this work are also summarised in (S4).
P. Watkins (HES), 30 July 2015.

April 2012-April 2013. Geophysical Survey.
Magnetometry survey on proposed line of Norwich Northern Distributor Road (Block 30).
This survey of the south-west corner of the field revealed little clear evidence for sub-surface archaeological remains. Although a number of anomalies were detected these were thought to be of predominantly geological origin.
See report (S5) for further details.
P. Watkins (HES), 5 August 2015.
