NHER 61155 (Monument record) - Probable post-medieval marl or gravel pits

Summary

A walkover survey in 1998 identified several large pits in this area. Cartographic sources suggest that these pits were open during the second half of the 19th century.

Rapid Earthwork Identification Survey (Compartments 5066 and 5067).
A number of large pits (20-50m in diameter) were identified in this area. These are not visible on the 1" 1st Edition O.S map but appear to correspond with features marked on the 6" map.

March 2006. Walkover Survey.
Rapid Earthwork Identification Survey (Compartment 71550). Features identified included:
Ditch and bank both of which correspond with boundaries marked by the O. S.; unlikely to be earlier in date than 18th or 19th century.
Two circular pits, also marked by O.S. Likely to be post-medieval marl or chalk extraction pits. These pits were both noted during the earlier survey.
