Summary

Metal-detecting at this location in 2014 and 2016 recovered two Roman coin hoards, both of which were found with the same small area. The first comprises 24 silver denarii and was most likely deposited in the mid 2nd century AD. The second comprises 9 silver silique and was probably deposited between c. 395 and 410 AD. The presence of two hoards in close proximity suggests this may have been the site of a notable landmark, such as a large tree.

Civil Parish EAST CARLETON, SOUTH NORFOLK, NORFOLK

December 2014. Metal-detecting. [1].
Found spread over a small area:
Roman coin hoard of 16 silver denarii dating to between 69 AD and 138 AD. The latest coins (issues of Hadrian dating to 134-138 AD), are in near mint condition with practically no circulation wear. The hoard was therefore most likely deposits in the mid 2nd century AD.
Found spread over the same small area:
Roman coin hoard of 6 silver silique dating to between 367 AD and 402 AD. All are clipped to a greater or lesser degree, which together with the crisp condition of the latest coins suggests loss or deposition between c. 395 AD and 410 AD.
Information from PAS import.
The denarii hoard and the silique hoard were both disclaimed as Treasure (Refs: 2015 T858 and 2015 T859 respectively), and returned to the finder.
E. McDonald (HES), 1 June 2020. Amended by P. Watkins (HES), 1 February 2021.

April 2016. Metal-detecting. [2].
Found at same location as earlier discoveries:
1 Late Iron Age and 7 coins. All silver denarii of Roman issue dating to between 32 BC and 128 AD. First addendum to the hoard of 16 denarii recovered in December 2014. The earliest coin is extremely worn with the others exhibiting the same wear patterns as the first group.
Also found in same area as earlier discoveries:
3 Roman coins. All silver silique dating to between c.353 and 410 AD. First addendum to the hoard of 6 silique recovered in December 2014. These coins are consistent with the previous examples and do not change the suggested date of loss or deposition.
Information from PAS import.
These groups of silver denarii and silver silique were both disclaimed as Treasure (Refs : 2017 T565 and 2017 T563 respectively) and returned to the finder.
E. McDonald (HES), 1 June 2020. Amended by P. Watkins (HES), 1 February 2021.
